Rhythms for a melodious body!!

When it happened?
On a Sunday afternoon, I was curling around my bed hazily still thinking whether to wake up after my alarm has snoozed 5 times. My brother was watching television and a song started playing. I didn't visually see the song but I was able to recollect every lyric of that old song even when I was half asleep. At that moment, I thought How was my mind able to remember such specific details of a film song when I was breaking my heads in learning my lessons :P?. Some might say, INTEREST as the differentiating factor which is partially correct but there is some more science in it.

So, when I slowly started learning more about it, I  found something very interesting. I'm not aware if anyone else has also observed it.The ultimate differentiating factor was not completely interest as most teachers put it, it's also the SOUND. The sound here which I refer to is only the rhythmic sound not the loud jarring cacophony. That is why even though we get to hear prolific lectures in classrooms, the contents don't stay for a long time in our mind because they aren't rhythmic( Some Exceptions accepted!) .I don't ask professors to sing their lectures melodiously but instead more multimedia tools can be adopted instead of monotonous lectures.

Why Rhythm?
Every aspect inside us, outside us is following a disciplined rhythmic patterns thus making beats very important.People often conclude that beat refers only to HEART BEAT which ensures that we are alive. But, most people are unaware of the fact that other parts of our body too are rhythmic. The rhythm of the mind/brain is called as Electroencephalogram(EEG) which gives the electrical activity of the brain. The rhythm of the heart is called as Electrocardiogram(ECG) which is quite a popular term and it tracks the electrical activity in the heart. All these graphs have specific patterns thus ensuring that the body is in constant state of vibration. The inside clock of our body which keeps our entire metabolism and sleep cycle stabilized is called circadian rhythm.Even the earth is in a constant state of seismic vibration thereby keeping the tectonic plates intact. When the vibrations go beyond a certain limit, that's when we get earthquakes. This applies to human beings too, when the vibrations of our body go beyond a limit, problems arise!

Wave-Particle duality.. A peep about Quantum Physics
This phenomenon of wave-particle duality is mostly related with Light. Every object in this world can exist either in wave form or in a particle form. Just like light, Human body follows this theory of wave-particle duality as every cell in the human body is a photon of light. So, that is the reason why we have both Brain waves and vibrating particles inside human body.( I can write more about this! but it's getting a way too big.. Let me get back to the crux..:D)

Why Am I speaking so much of Science?
This might be the question raising in your mind now. There is an important connection in here. From my observation, I was able to conclude that our mind yearns for something rhythmic and responds well to anything that is rhythmic. This can be proved by the fact that almost all musical forms which exist in this world is supported by a percussion instrument to create the beats. When a song plays, all your bodily senses are activated thus making our entire mind to wholly concentrate on the song which creates the interest to hear it. When we see it visually, it amplifies the effect as our eyes are seeing it, our ears are hearing the waves and simultaneously the beats are making our body vibrate along with the particles in our body. This is why at times, even without our persuasion our legs start to tap to the beat in tune with our body. When our whole body gets involved in something, then naturally those lyrics cannot be easily erased from the memory.

So, this is the science behind Song remembrance :P. After thinking about this, I started sleeping again :P.

Love,
Ram Thilak.

Thanks to my Professor Mr.Srivatsan for recreating my interest in this subject and enhancing my knowledge about the wave-particle duality of human body

  3. Interesting! I'd once read that kids having trouble in school could find improvement by listening to rhythmic instrumental music while studying, especially if they were then allowed to listen to the exact same music while taking their tests. I'm keeping it stored in the ol' brain for in case my children need that boost.

    Good luck with the A-to-Z!
